PS5 Pro is selling out at US retailers ahead of GTA 6

Several outlets link the shortage to GTA VI demand. Sony has not publicly commented, and the cause is still an inference.

The PS5 Pro is running out of stock at major US retailers, and several outlets tie the shortage to demand ahead of GTA VI's November 19, 2026 launch. Engadget, TweakTown and CBR reported the shortage around October 18; Sony has not publicly explained it.

What is being reported

Claim Status
PS5 Pro sold out at Walmart, Target, Best Buy and PlayStation Direct Reliable report (Engadget, TweakTown)
Sony told distributors supply constraints will limit stock until next year Single-source report (Playfront, via Engadget)
Resale listings far above list price Reported by several outlets; figures vary
GTA VI demand is the cause Outlets' inference, not confirmed by Sony

The PS5 Pro lists at about $900 in the US. Outlets note that third-party sellers are asking much more, so check the seller before paying.

Why GTA VI is blamed

Coverage points to the surge in interest after the GTA VI Extended Look, whose footage was reportedly captured on a base PS5, and to the approach of launch. That is plausible, but nobody has published sales data that isolates GTA VI as the driver. Treat the link as an informed guess.

Do you need a PS5 Pro?

No. GTA VI is announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has not announced any PS5 Pro-specific enhancement. What we know about performance is limited to trailer analysis; see our Digital Foundry launch trailer breakdown. For console differences, there is no official spec comparison yet.

What to do

  • Don't pay scalper prices for hardware you don't need to play on day one.
  • Use official retailers and PlayStation Direct; be wary of "early access" or bundle offers from unknown sites.
  • Check our price and editions guide and the pre-load and file size guide to prepare.

We will update this page if Sony or Rockstar comment.
