GTA 6 is still being refined, Rockstar says — but that isn’t a delay
A Bloomberg interview sparked “GTA 6 is unfinished” headlines. Here is what was actually said, what “going gold” means and what it does not change.

GTA VI is still being polished five weeks before launch, but that is not the same as being unfinished or delayed. In a Bloomberg-linked interview reported on October 16, 2026, Rockstar’s Phil Hooker said “the game is never completely settled” and that the team changed things “even within the last few months”. GamesRadar+, Insider Gaming and Notebookcheck all report the comments; on October 17 Vice published a piece arguing they were read the wrong way.
What was actually said
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Hooker: development is “never completely settled”, there is “never an exact blueprint” | Reliable report (Bloomberg, via several outlets) |
| GTA VI has not yet gone gold | Reported by Notebookcheck; Rockstar has not commented on it |
| The comments mean GTA VI is unfinished or will slip | Not supported; Vice and Notebookcheck say no |
| Release date | Official: November 19, 2026 |
The remark is about how Rockstar works: a huge open-world game is tuned, fixed and rebalanced until the last possible moment. It is not an announcement of missing features.
What “going gold” means
“Gold” is the point where the launch build is finalized and sent off for manufacturing and distribution, in this case mostly digital codes and store submissions. A game that is not gold five weeks out is normal for a title this size, and a gold build is often followed by a day-one patch. Rockstar has not said whether it will announce the milestone publicly.
What it means for players
- No delay has been announced. Rockstar’s date is still November 19, with pre-loading planned for November 12.
- Expect a day-one update. That would be standard, and it is one more reason to leave free space before launch.
- Rockstar’s publishing lead also spoke about avoiding crunch in the same wave of interviews: see our interview recap.
Watch for any statement from Rockstar itself; we will update this page if the studio confirms a gold date. Rewatch the latest footage in the Launch Trailer breakdown.

FAQ
Has GTA 6 gone gold?
Not as far as is public. Rockstar has not announced it, and Notebookcheck reports the game has not yet gone gold. Going gold means the launch build is finalized for manufacturing and distribution.
Did Rockstar say GTA 6 is unfinished?
No. Rockstar’s Phil Hooker said development is “never completely settled” and that things changed in recent months. Vice says this was misread as an admission the game is unfinished.
Is GTA 6 delayed again?
No delay has been announced. The official release date remains November 19, 2026.
What happens after the game goes gold?
Players can still get a day-one patch. Large games are normally patched after the gold build, so updates at launch would not be unusual.
