GTA 6 launch day could cost the US economy $1 billion, says one economist’s estimate

A Spanish economist’s back-of-envelope figure went viral. Here is what it says, how it is built and why to take it with salt.

One economist estimates that around 1.5 million US workers could skip work on GTA 6 launch day, November 19, costing roughly $1 billion in lost output. The figure, reported around October 20, 2026 by Fox 29, NewsNation, Game Rant and others, comes from José García Montalvo of Pompeu Fabra University. It is a projection, not data.

How the number is built

Input Value (as reported)
Workers absent on launch day ~1.5 million (not independently verified)
Average annual output per worker ~$70,000
Result ~$1 billion lost in one day
Most affected groups Men aged 18–30 and tech workers

The estimate points to GTA V’s 2013 launch, when a notable share of young workers in big cities reportedly took the day off. Some outlets add that many people have saved paid time off for the day.

Why to be careful

The absence count is an assumption, so the final dollar figure is only as solid as that guess. Lost output in one day is also not the same as permanent economic damage: work is often made up later. And it is unrelated to Take-Two’s own numbers: the publisher has guided to more than $1 billion in operating cash flow for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, a different measure entirely.

What it means

Mostly a headline about how big the launch feels. Players planning time off should check their own employer’s rules. For what is confirmed about the day itself, see our release time guide and the pre-order sales estimate.
